Scientific Name: Semaprochilodus insignis

Common Name: Flagtail Prochilodus, Kissing Prochilodus

Adult Size:  14 inches

Life Expectancy:  5 - 10 years

Habitat: Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Guyana and Brazil

Minimum Tank Size:  150 gallons

Ideal Tank Conditions:

  • Temperature Range: 73 - 84°F
  • pH Range: 5.5 - 7.2
  • Water Hardness: 1 - 15

Temperament: Aggressive towards its own kind when kept in small numbers, but can be maintained in groups of six or more in larger tanks. Otherwise it’s best kept as a single specimen in a comunity of medium to large fish.

Diet & Nutrition: Though an omnivore, this fish is primarily an herbivore and should be offered plenty of vegetable matter in the form of blanched spinach, lettuce, cucumber, courgette, algae wafers and similar. It will also accept most good quality dried foods and small frozen fare such as bloodworms and Daphnia.

Breeding & Spawning: Unrecorded in the hobby. This species has a complicated migratory spawning cycle in nature.

Gender: Difficult to sex, although mature females are said to be rounder-bellied than males.
